In a single episode, we offer three ad positions: pre-roll, mid-roll, and post-roll. On Podbean, users can allocate a maximum of 1 pre-roll, 1 post-roll, and up to 20 mid-roll time slots for each episode. Each time slot can accommodate a maximum of 3 ads.
When a listener requests an episode, the Podbean ad-server checks the listener's IP address to figure out which ads should be put into the ad positions. If there are multiple ads available for one ad position, the priority levels of the ads will determine which ads will play and which ads play first.
The priority levels for different types of ads are generally as follows:
- PodAds (Dynamic Ad Insertion) campaign ads
- Podbean Ads Marketplace campaign ads
- VAST ads
- PodAds (Dynamic Ad Insertion) campaign ads
In the PodAds ad type, you can further customize the priority level for each campaign on a scale of 1 to 10. The default level is 1, and higher numbers indicate a higher priority. If multiple campaigns are set at the same level, the campaigns created earlier will be given higher priority.
- Podbean Ads Marketplace campaign ads
In the Podbean Ads Marketplace, ads with higher CPM (Cost Per Thousand Impressions) are given higher priority .
- VAST ads
VAST ads mainly refer to programmatic ads from 3rd-party DSPs. Within these DSP programmatic ads, ads with a higher CPM hold a higher priority.
If you set a PodAds campaign with VAST ad tags, it will follow this priority level. However, PodAds VAST ads will receive priority over 3rd-party DSP programmatic ads.

- Example 1:
There're 4 ads available for the pre-roll. They're A, B, C, and D, in order of priority. The ads will be inserted in the following sequence: A B C, and D will not be played. - Example 2:
Let's say you have set two mid-roll time slots for an episode, at 10:00 and 20:00. There are 3 available mid-roll ads: A, B, and C, in order of priority. At 10:00, you will hear ads A and B, while at 20:00, you will hear ad C.
